Backyard Summer Sessions in Wichita, KS | The Easiest Family Photos You'll Ever Take

If you're anything like me, you've probably looked around your backyard at the end of a long summer day and thought... "I wish I could just freeze this." The sprinkler is still out from this afternoon. Your kids have popsicle-stained smiles and grass-covered feet. Someone's chasing bubbles. Someone else is collecting rocks they'll insist are treasure and we need to add to the never-ending collection. And you? You're soaking it all in while simultaneously wondering how they're already getting so big.

These are the moments we never want to forget.

The Best Photos Happen When Nobody Is Trying Too Hard

Can I let you in on a little secret for capturing amazing memories?? I don't need your children to sit perfectly still. I don't expect them to smile at the camera for thirty minutes. Actually...I'd rather they didn't! I want them running barefoot through the grass. Laughing so hard they fall over. Showing me their favorite trucks and toys. Climbing into your lap because that’s the safest spot in the world for them.

Those tiny, ordinary moments are the ones that become priceless years from now. The goal isn't perfect photos. The goal is remembering what this season actually felt like. Photos that instantly take you back to this very moment.

And that’s exactly why I created Backyard Summer Sessions.

Your Backyard Is Already the Perfect Place

I wanted to create something really special to help bottle up the feeling of summer. To hold onto the end of summer for just a little longer. So when I sat down and thought about it, I knew we needed something simpler. Something fun, that truly makes memories. And when most moms think about scheduling family photos, they picture all the work that comes before anyone ever smiles for the camera. Coordinating outfits, packing snacks, making sure everyone's ready on time, loading the kids into the car, and hoping nobody has a meltdown before you even arrive—it can feel like a lot. Sometimes, it feels like enough to make you put family photos off for "another season."

And I’m not sure about you, but for my family, leaving the house isn’t always an easy task.

So instead of asking you to pack everyone up and meet me somewhere, I’ll come to you! Your kids get to stay in the place where they're already the most comfortable…home. They know every tree that's perfect for climbing, the perfect spot for an imaginary game, and the swing that's heard a hundred requests for "Higher, Mom!"

Because when I think about the photographs you will treasure twenty years from now, I don't picture the perfect backdrop. I picture the place where your family's story is already being written. Right where the memories are actually being made.

Someday, These Moments Will Be the "Good Old Days"

One day, your home won't echo with little feet. The swings won’t be played on every day. The sidewalk chalk will wash away and not be drawn back in the next day. Your kids won't ask you to push them on their swings "just one more time."

And while those days may feel impossibly far away right now, they have a funny way of becoming memories before we're ready.

Photographs won't stop time. But they will let us step back into it. They give us the amazing privilege of remembering how little their hands felt in ours. How loud the laughter was. How full life felt when their little arms wrapped all the way around our neck.

What Should You Plan for a Backyard Summer Session?

The beauty of these sessions is how simple they really are! Yes, you do still have to figure out what everyone will wear, but keep it simple and don’t overthink it. Choose a simple color palette for coordinating outfits (no shoes required!), and plan 1-2 activities that your family will enjoy. Here’s some ideas to help you pick your activities!

  • Drawing with chalk

  • Running through the sprinklers

  • Spraying the kids with the hose

  • Giant yard games (if you have them)

  • Making ice cream cones together (let them add the sprinkles & chocolate syrup!)

  • Eating popsicles

  • Eating fresh fruit (strawberries, watermelon slices, apples)

  • Having a picnic together

  • Reading a story on a blanket

And while I love that these happen right in your own backyard, we can definitely still capture these same summer memories at a few other locations if you’d prefer that! Here’s a few spots I’d love to meet you at for end-of-summer memories:

  • Ice cream shop (or other dessert spots)

  • Playground

  • Splash pad

  • Park with open area to run and play

  • Snow cone cart

  • Apple orchard to pick fresh fruit
