Let’s picture the perfect fall evening for a second. Maybe it’s something like this… Stunning, bright orange and red leaves that seem to change color right before your eyes, that cool, crisp fall breeze that makes it fun to wear layers and sweaters again, and time to snuggle close with the ones you love the most. Fall is one of my absolute favorite times of the year. Maybe it’s because I my birthday is in October, maybe it’s because the Kansas weather finally settles down a little bit. Either way, it’s one of the BEST times to document your family’s memories, with such gorgeous autumn colors all around you. And I know what you’re thinking…it’s still summer, why are we talking about fall photos? So, even though fall might feel far away, please trust me—those golden leaves and cozy sessions book up faster than you think…And you’ll be so glad that you planned ahead for this one!

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos
This is usually the biggest stress point for moms—so let’s simplify it.
Start with Mom’s Outfit First
If you feel confident and comfortable, everything else falls into place. Decide what you want to wear first, and work everyone else’s around that. Let’s face it…these photos were your idea, and I want YOU to feel amazing in what you’re wearing. Pick something you love here!
Coordinate, Don’t match
Instead of everyone in the same outfit, aim for colors that complement each other. It works well to choose 1-2 main colors as your base, and 1-3 neutrals that work well with together. If you have any questions about outfits, please just reach out! I’m always here to help. Here’s a few more tips specifically for fall:
Stick to Warm, Earthy Tones
Creams
Rust
Olive Green
Soft browns
Muted mustard
These tones photograph beautifully against fall backgrounds in Kansas. Try to avoid neons, graphic tees, and bold colors or patterns that feel overly busy. But do add the extra layers.
Keep Comfort in Mind (Especially for Kids)
If it’s itchy, stiff, or uncomfortable… it will show in your photos. The best outfits are ones that you and your kids feel comfy wearing and able to move freely in. I’m all about movement, walking, running, playing, so make sure you’re going to feel confident and comfortable in your outfits, please.
How to Prepare Your Kids (Without the Stress)
Let’s just say it: kids don’t need to be “perfect” for photos.
Some of the best moments come from:
Giggles
Movement
Snuggles
Even a little chaos — promise it’s okay!
A few simple tips:
Bring non-messy snacks for in between, or bubbles if they work well for your kids!
Please don’t try to bribe your kiddos… I find it works best to frame the session as a fun time together. Tell your little girl that you’ll be going to see how pretty your dresses can spin together. Tell your little boy that you’ll be looking for the coolest leaf you can find. Whatever works to pique their interest and take the pressure off.
Let go of expectations of perfection
Your job isn’t to control every moment—it’s to show up and love on your people. Relaxed and joyfully.
I’ll take care of the rest.
