Behind the Scenes of an Extended Family Photo Session in Wichita, Kansas

Planning a family photo session is one thing—but planning one for 17 people? That can feel downright overwhelming! But I promise, it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re gathering grandparents, adult siblings, cousins, or multiple families, extended family sessions can be so worth it. They’re filled with laughter, connection, and memories that deserve to be captured beautifully.

Recently, I photographed a large extended family here in Wichita, Kansas, and this session was full of love, playful moments, and stunning coordinated outfits (think soft blues, neutrals, gorgeous textures and classy patterns!). Today, I’m pulling back the curtain on what goes into a successful session with a big group, and how you can prepare if you're considering booking one.

How to Prepare for Your Extended Family Session

Planning Ahead is Key

When you're coordinating with multiple households, it’s best to start planning early. I always recommend choosing a date 1–2 months in advance, especially if you're aiming for a specific season or time of day (golden hour is always a favorite!). For this particular session though, it was mid-day in the heat of summer, but it was still beautiful! The family was getting together for their annual family reunion, so before the rest of the family arrived, it was the perfect time for multi-generational family pictures.

✔ Tip: Assign one person to be the main point of contact to streamline communication. For this session I worked with a granddaughter and was able to easily communicate with her, and she could pass along any information with the rest of the family.

Choosing Outfits That Coordinate

This family nailed it by selecting a soft, summery palette of blues, whites, and neutrals. Coordinating doesn’t mean everyone has to wear the same thing. Matchy-matchy is a bit much, especially in big groups. So, think of it more like telling a color story. Different fabrics like denim/chambray, linen, and cotton brought texture and dimension to their group shots.

✔ Tip: Stick to 2–3 base colors, mix in some subtle patterns or textures, and avoid super bright/neon tones that can be distracting.

Variety is Built Into the Session

Yes, we get that big group shot first—but we also break things up into smaller combinations: grandparents with grandkids, each nuclear family, cousins, siblings, you name it. These moments are where personalities really shine.

✔ Tip: Relax and have fun! I’ll guide you and your family through the poses and I always come with a plan to make the session run smoothly without feeling rushed or chaotic. And if you have ideas that will add meaning to your family’s session, please share it with me.

It’s More Fun Than You Think

Most people are a little nervous going into a large group photo session, but by the end, I’ve heard so many families say, “That was actually fun!” My goal is to make the experience feel laid-back and joyful—not stiff or overly posed. This group was so sweet and fun to be around, and really excited to capture the joyful memories of simply being together with their dear grandma.

The entire session is more fun and more meaningful when you can just be comfortable, and be yourself. Try not to add unnecessary stress or worries beforehand, and come into your session ready to capture some joyful memories.

These Are the Photos You’ll Treasure Forever

Extended family photos aren’t just about documenting what you look like. They’re about freezing a moment in time when your people were together. And honestly? That’s something worth celebrating. It’s not often that the whole family from all over the country is able to all be together in the same place, so it’s worth the time and energy to savor these memories forever.
